Natural Homemade Bug Spray

One of my least favorite things about Summer is the Bugs!

When I get bit (which seems to happen more often to me than most of the other people around me) I swell up! Within five minutes of getting bit, I develop a welt, usually at least the size of a dime! Luckily the welt goes down within 12 hours or so, and then it is just a normal bug bite.

Because of how much I get bitten AND swell up, I go through a lot of bug spray. The smell of bug spray is not the best thing around, and it is filled with all sorts of chemicals. There are lots of natural bug repellents – and many herbs help keep bugs away! Lavender, Citronella, Citrus are just a few of the natural scents which help keep bugs away.

Since we got married outside, on a farm, I knew I wanted lots of bug spray to keep everyone bug-free at our wedding. I also didn’t want our whole wedding to smell like bug spray though! Making your own Bug Spray is SO easy and you can control exactly what goes onto your families’ bodies (perfect for babies and children).

  • Spray Bottles
  • Witch Hazel
  • Essential Oils (citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus and lavender OR buy a pre-made Bug Off Oil Mix

Combine 2 cups witch hazel with about 40-50 drops essential oil and pour into your spray bottles. Mix Well (shake) before using. Test clothing before spraying all over everything – but this should be safe for all people and skins!

*NOTE… after much testing and re-making this, I have come to the conclusion that I liked about 20 drops of the Bug Off Mix & then about 20 drops of Lavender (or about 10 of lavender and 10 of lemongrass)

  1. This is pretty cool. And I have a (really absurd) question: How well does this concoction work compared with the commercially available stuff? Looking forward to learning more! Thanks! 🙂

    • Adam – everyone at the wedding really seemed to find that it worked! I have no leftover bottles (I guess that means everyone loved it and took them) so I will have to make another batch to use!! I think for normal everyday bugs this will work just as well as anything with all the chemicals – although it has not been tested with crazy jungle creatures or anything like that!!

  2. I am just like Rachel… a magnet for bugs, ending up with giant welts. I was honored to be at the wedding and used the natural bug spray – I NEVER GOT ONE BITE. So I lifted the spray bottle off my table (I actually asked the bride’s mother if I could take it) and have used it since and have not gotten one bite. It smells wonderful and I am happy I am not using chemicals on my body!

Which essential oils did you use – I love the smell? Also, how long can you leave the mixture before you have to discard it?

    • I am SO glad that you liked it & found that it has still been working for you!!!

I used a pre-mixed combination of Citronella, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Lavender, Litsea, Tea Tree, Patchouli & Catnip (with some extra lavender). You can use any mixture of those – but I would highly suggest Lavender, Lemongrass, Citronella & Eucalyptus.

Since everything in here is natural and doesn’t easily expire, I would say that it has a pretty long shelf life. Although, since it is so easy to throw together, I would prefer to make it in small batches to keep it as fresh as possible. So, long story short…. make a new batch monthly?!

        • I got the mix from Amazon, as linked in the “supplies”. It is from a Seller on Amazon called Plant Therapy Essential Oils and the exact blend is called Bug Off Synergy Essential Oil Blend.

  3. In the military we just ate lots of garlic. It kept the skeeters away nicely.

    • I like that solution too – I eat lots of garlic, but am just afraid that if I eat TOO much it’ll keep all the people away too though!

  4. Thanks for making my summer so much brighter… not one mosquito bite since using your natural bug spray. I hated using all those chemicals and the sticky feeling of the commercial sprays. This isn’t sticky, smells terrific and the #1 thing- IT KEEPS THE MOSQUITOS AWAY. Thanks.

    • I am SO glad to hear that this is a help to your summer!! Thank YOU for letting me know your success with this yummy smelling & natural product! 🙂
